The Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) has announced its support for various virtual currencies. The organization has commenced accepting donations in Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Litecoin (LTC) as well as Zcash (ZEC) among other assets.
The FPF organization received a donation of 1,000 ETH on Monday 18. This was a big move for the non-profit organization and marked the beginning of a new era of cryptocurrency gifts and donations. The donation came from Mainframe; a digital asset network that is championing censorship resistance. Mainframe is remembered from earlier in the year (March to be specific) after it gifted people at a party with coins from its own issued token. Mainframe has also committed to supporting the Freedom of Press Foundation using their technology. FPF has a mission to protect privacy and the freedom of journalists online.
Decentralized technology if applied well can be used to resist surveillance as well as censorship. Mainframe is not only suitable for blockchain enterprises but also for individuals who want to stay away from censorship and surveillance. The platform is yet to reach its potential but it is working to ensure that there is more press freedom for journalists, individuals and other news organizations all over the world.
While cryptocurrency donations are no stranger to the Freedom of the Press Foundation non-profit organization, the donations hit a snag along the way. Bitcoin was the first currency to be accepted back in 2013. This was made possible through the Stripe integration. However, the integration broke shortly after cutting short Bitcoin donations. Significantly, the latest announcement brings back crypto donations with the ability to allow donations right from the wallets. The announcement read:
“We are excited to launch a cryptocurrency donation page for @FreedomofPress, where we can now accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Zcash to support press freedom.”
The foundation also took the opportunity to thank Mainframe decentralized network for their generous contribution saying:
“A HUGE thank you to @Mainframe_HQ, who is helping kick off our cryptocurrency donation page with a donation of 1000 ETH! We are thrilled @Mainframe_HQ shares our goal of protecting journalists and whistleblowers in the digital age.” FPF added, “Mainframe, a blockchain company building a network for censorship resistant communication and decentralized applications.”
The Freedom of the Press Foundation has different projects that need financial support in order to fight for the freedom of expression through press including but not limited to Secure Drop: The platform that is open source for whistleblowing. The secure drop platform is currently used by over 60 news foundations based all around the world.
The foundation has provided detailed instructions on how the donations can be made on its website. The organization has provided a wallet address for ease of making donations. Moreover, the donations are also open to other virtual currencies that are not currently listed on the website. This can be done by directly contacting the foundation for assistance. However, FPF will be adding more digital assets to the platform to widen their scope to the larger cryptocurrency community. In addition to that, the non-profit will be adding support to allow donations to shielded Zcash (ZEC) address.
